Cran d'Escalles beach: walks and practical advice

In the heart of the Opal Coast, between Calais and Dunkirk, lies Gravelines, one of the most beautiful villages in France. This French village is completely fortified and surrounded by canals. Stroll through the narrow streets, discover the beautiful historical buildings and take wonderful photos from one of the many panoramic viewpoints on the river Aa. Between the sea and the river, a visit to the rhythm of the water awaits you!

WE GIVE YOU 3 GOOD REASONS TO DISCOVER GRAVELINES!

Because no, Gravelines is not just about its nuclear power station and it is well worth a visit. And the 11,000 inhabitants of the town (known as the Gravelinois) will not tell you otherwise.

IT IS A FORTIFIED TOWN

Gravelines has a very rich historical heritage. The current shape of the city was built in the 17th century by Vauban, who reinforced the city with a typical star pattern, just like the Dutch city L'Écluse. Years later, the town has retained its old charm and some of its fortifications. Gravelines consists of 4 parts: the historic centre, Petit-Fort-Philippe, Grand-Fort-Philippe and Les Huttes. On the border between Flanders and Calais, Gravelines has retained the charm of both areas.

Gravelines also has the third largest marina on the Opal Coast. Originally, the village was specialised in cod fishing.

Evancy's tip: Take a walk on the ramparts of Gravelines, where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the town centre and the surrounding area. You can even take a boat or pedal boat tour of the Citadel.

IT HAS ITS OWN SEASIDE RESORT

The nearest beach is Petit-Fort-Philippe. On a nice summer's day you might even be tempted to take a dip in the North Sea! It is also possible to admire the 360 degree view over the sea and the town by climbing to the top of the lighthouse of the small seaside resort for 2€.

NEVER A DULL MOMENT!

Gravelines is a town where you can easily spend a day without getting bored! Indeed, there are many activities to do. For example, we recommend that you go to the Parc des rives de l'Aa where you can do a lot of different things, from paddling to rowing to canoeing! A great place to spend some quality time with the family. The town is particularly popular with families wishing to settle on the coast because of the pleasant living environment: neighbourhood house, proximity to Dunkirk, multi-sports halls etc.

If you prefer museums to outdoor activities, you can always visit the museum of drawing and printing in Gravelines.

If you are a sports fan you can even attend a basketball match: the BCM Gravelines Dunkerque is famous all over the world.

Near Gravelines you can also discover Dunkerque, the small village of Bourbourg or the national reserve of Platier d'Oye.
