What to see and do in Boulogne sur Mer ?

The tourist attractions in Boulogne sur Mer

Boulogne-sur-Mer is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful jewel of the French Opal Coast. With its rich history, picturesque streets and beautiful historic buildings, this port city is a must to visit! At the entrance of Boulogne-sur-Mer, you will be overwhelmed by an instant holiday feeling, thanks to the magnificent view of the beach and the port. This diverse city has something for everyone: nature, culture and sport... It's impossible to get bored!

But of course, Boulogne-sur-Mer has much more to offer. This northern French town, classified as a "Ville d'Art et d'Histoire" (City of Art and History) has a beautiful historic town centre that is well worth a visit with its welcoming streets, charming restaurants and traditional fish market. But what should certainly not be missing on the list is the Basilique Notre-Dame with its beautiful frescoes and impressive dome. The real attraction is the basilica's crypt, a maze of galleries and corridors with several religious artefacts and historical relics.

Boulogne-sur-Mer is and remains a coastal town, so you can take long walks on the beach and enjoy water sports. But the favourite sport of the Boulonnais is of course sailing, also known as sand yachting.

Nausicaa, the largest aquarium in Europe

The highlight of Boulogne-sur-Mer is surely Nausicaá, the largest aquarium in Europe. Sharks, giant manta rays, sea lions.... Nausicaá has them all! You can easily walk around for a day and marvel at the magnificent fish in the spectacular aquariums, get to know the wonderful underwater world and even help feed the fish in the lagoon! In short, Nausicaá is the ideal indoor activity for young and old alike.

Visit the Opal Coast

Thanks to its central location, Boulogne-sur-Mer is also the ideal starting point for exploring the rest of the Opal Coast. Cities such as Calais and Le Touquet are only half an hour's drive away. The famous chalk cliffs of Cap Blanc-Nez and Cap Gris-Nez are nearby as are the seaside resorts of Wimereux and Wissant. Even a day trip to Dover and Canterbury is possible, because from Calais you are only 90 minutes away to England!
